Cafe Epicurious

Cafe Epicurious@Railmall

When it comes to out-of-the-world ambience, Epicurious’ bare-bones dining room with minimalist furniture won’t win any prizes. But what the cafe lacks in looks, they make up for the simple yet unpretentious grub. Come in your favourite flip-flops, be glad that you will still get a seat like everyone else. The bukit timah folks love to congregate here to indulge in a quiet affair, and it’s not hard to see why: the overhead railway tracks has already ceased to operate. This branch offers a nice respite from the flock of early-birds over at the Quayside twin, and rejoice that the nosh is comparable.

Take our word for it, their classic chinese plates do evoke a sense of nostalgia.

Eggs Benedict, 14++

Eggs Benedict, 14++

two poached eggs with grilled smoked ham on an english muffin, topped with Hollandaise sauce

Expect the hollandaise sauce to carry a tangy note enough to pique our tastebuds, and fork-tender slices of shaved ham were also invited to join in the classic affair. The spiced-up chunks of roasted potatoes were the representatives of the homemade chips, and they were unexpectedly delightful to the palate. In the absence of the usual bed of greens, make do with the sweet slice of watermelon for a wholesome and refreshing finale. Simple yet decent.

The Full Monty, 22++

The Full Monty, 22++

three eggs (fried or scrambled) or two eggs poached, sausage, bacon, grilled tomato, mushroom, baked beans, home fries and buttered toast. 1 regular coffee/ tea and 1 glass of orange juice

It is hard to leave this place hungry with The Full Monty, though your wallet may just be offended. Apart from the runny scrambled and the pulpy tomato, the sidekicks were not at any chance memorable. At least, whipping up the same dish at home (without a struggle) is not an overstatement. The coffee and orange juice were not much of a help either. Save your moolah on this one.

Baked Eggs with toast soldiers, 14++

Baked Eggs with toast soldiers, 14++

two eggs with bacon, mushroom, tomato and cream, covered with cheese and baked until gooey

Playfully command your toast soldiers to sink into the casserole. Break through that web of melted mozzarella and infiltrate into the wobbly morsels of pleasure: it is, in fact, a hide-out for the bits and pieces of bacon, mushroom and tomato. The creamy melange was baked to perfection, so leave no stones unturned. Pity that the soldiers were a tad dehydrated that day.

French Toasts, 8++

French Toasts, 8++

3 pieces made with raisin bread and served with marmalade and syrup

This is the ideal candidate for the sweet-tooth.

Watch out for a stack of 3 french toasts of brown tinged with gold, adorned with fruits and splashes of icing sugar. Sink your teeth into the pillowy-soft carbs and let the egg-toasts mixture command a nod from you. Go ahead and drizzle the maple syrup, the toasts weren’t too sweet.

Our only grumble: the toothache-inducing marmalade.

We say pop by to fill your curiosity and bellies with simple, comfort grub.
